The main thing you'll be able to do in the lab is research upgrades for your weapons, your crew, and the Normandy. You won't be allowed into the lab until Mordin has boarded the ship. You'll be able to use your private terminals to check on the status of your crew, review any upgrades that you've purchased (from #5), read messages, and watch combat training videos. If you run out of fuel during a trip, then you'll be charged some Palladium, but you'll be transported to a system with a fuel depot. You can buy fuel at fuel depots, which are located in all systems with a mass relay. Unlike the original Mass Effect, it will cost you fuel to move between planetary systems.
